Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
