Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
